Protecting Workers from Wage Theft

Proteger los derechos de los trabajadores en el Distrito de Columbia.

The District of Columbia is committed to protecting workers rights to fair wages, overtime pay, and sick and safe leave. Under District law—one of the most progressive in the nation—employers who fail to pay their workers, or who do not pay their workers on time, can be liable for up to four times the amount of unpaid wages, plus administrative penalties, attorneys’ fees, and costs.

The Office of the Attorney General has the power to enforce the District’s wage laws through pre-trial investigation, filing cases, and pursuing enforcement of agency orders. OAG uses its limited resources to investigate and prosecute the most egregious cases of wage theft, such as widespread pattern-and-practice cases, or exploitation of particularly vulnerable workers, including minors and homeless or undocumented workers.
