Washington, DC – As National Police Week begins, Attorney General Karl A. Racine today welcomed participants and thanked police for their service, particularly at a time when relations are tense between police and some in urban communities.

“In the wake of Baltimore, Ferguson and other places where tensions over policing have erupted into conflict and violence, I want to offer my thanks to the overwhelming majority of law-enforcement officers, who police their communities with fairness, compassion and devotion to the principles of due process and equal justice under law,” Attorney General Racine said. “In particular, I want to commend Chief Cathy Lanier and our Metropolitan Police Department for their work, mourn all officers we have lost in the line of duty, and welcome police officers from across the nation to the District of Columbia for Police Week.”

National Police Week was first designated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 as the week in which May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day, falls. Since then, the week has grown into a nationwide celebration of police officers and encompasses a memorial service and other events that draw tens of thousands of participants from around the country to Washington.

This morning, Attorney General Racine attended the 36th Annual Washington Area Law Enforcement Memorial Service.
