Attorney General Racine Wishes District Residents a Happy and Thoughtful Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday

Attorney General Releases Text of MLK Lecture He Delivered at Capitol View Branch Library

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today wished District residents a happy Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend and asked them not only to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy, but also to spend time this weekend examining that legacy and what it means for all Americans – and particularly for District residents.

“Dr. King was not only a pioneer, but also a prophet who called for racial, economic and social justice,” Attorney General Racine said. “He called all Americans to look into their hearts and examine whether our nation was living up to the creed of freedom and equality so eloquently articulated in our founding documents. We must continue to ask the same question today.”

Attorney General Racine concluded: “This holiday weekend, we should honor Dr. King’s memory by serving others and advocating for causes that will bring about justice, peace and reconciliation.”

The Attorney General also released the text of a Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture he delivered at the Capitol View Branch of the D.C. Public Library (DCPL) Wednesday evening, in which he examined Dr. King’s message and assessed how it relates to contemporary race relations in the United States. The lecture was part of a citywide series of DCPL-sponsored events designed to celebrate and assess Dr. King’s legacy. The text is attached.
