Attorney General Racine Continues Actions to Hold Sanford Capital Accountable

February 16, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced today that his office has filed two new actions against landlords who allegedly violated the District’s consumer protection laws by neglecting their properties while collecting rent from tenants who were living in unsafe and unsanitary apartments. Attorney General Racine also announced additional claims in a pending similar suit. The two new lawsuits were filed against the former owners and managers of the Franklin Street Apartments in Ward 5 and the G Street Apartments in Ward 7.

Court Rules New Energy Efficiency Standards Shelved by Trump Administration Must Go into Effect

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine and a coalition of 12 other attorneys general have secured a federal court ruling requiring new national energy efficiency standards go into effect. The coalition of attorneys general sued the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) last June for unlawfully refusing to implement the standards.

Statements of Mayor Bowser and Attorney General Racine on Settlement Ending Terrence Sterling Lawsuit

WASHINGTON, D. C. –– Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Attorney General Karl A. Racine issued the statements below regarding a $3.5 million settlement agreement the District reached with the family of the late Terrence Sterling. The agreement resolves a lawsuit filed by the family against the District in the wake of Mr. Sterling’s 2016 shooting death at the hands of a Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer.

Criminal Section

The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia (OAG) is one of two prosecutorial entities in the District, the other being the United States Attorney’s Office. The Criminal Section of the Public Safety Division (PSD) of OAG prosecutes adults who commit certain criminal offenses within the District. Specifically, the Criminal Section prosecutes five primary categories of criminal offenses:

Civil Enforcement Section

Matters handled by the Civil Enforcement Section include:

Alcoholic Beverage Control

The Section prosecutes violations of the District’s alcoholic beverage control laws before the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The Board may fine, and suspend or revoke the alcoholic beverage licenses of licensees that are the subject of the Section’s prosecutions.

Complaints about alcoholic beverage licensed establishments may be made to the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration at the hotline at 202-329-6347.

SFST Training Manuals

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the US Department of Transportation (US DOT), publishes a course given to law enforcement officers around the country to understand, administer, detect and document field sobriety test. Originally called the DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course, the newer version is now called Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) manual.

Attorney General Racine & 18 Counterparts Sue U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for Abandoning Borrower Protections

July 7, 2017

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine has joined a coalition of 19 state attorneys general in suing the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for abandoning a critical federal protection for students. The Borrower Defense Rule is designed to act as a shield for students who have been defrauded by predatory for-profit colleges.

DeVos’ decision puts in limbo thousands of District residents, whom the rule would have enabled to gain relief from loans they took out when they were misled into enrolling in predatory schools.
