Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced a wage theft lawsuit against a company operating supported-living facilities and its former owners for denying frontline health care workers the wages they were due after working extended hours for patients during the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced a wage theft lawsuit against Arise Virtual Solutions, Inc. and Comcast Cable Communications Management, LLC. Arise is a customer service support company that contracts with companies like Comcast to outsource their customer service needs. The lawsuit alleges that Arise and Comcast denied customer service agents minimum wage, overtime, and paid sick leave by misclassifying them as independent contractors rather than employees. Arise targets women of color in their marketing for service agents and then denies those workers the pay and benefits required by District law. Arise’s scheme has injured at least 180 workers in the District. OAG’s investigation into other companies engaged in similar unlawful schemes with Arise continues. 

 Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced a new lawsuit against Dynamic Contracting, Inc., a construction company that specializes in drywall installation, two of Dynamic’s general contractors, and four of Dynamic’s labor subcontractors for engaging in a scheme to reduce their costs through the systemic and widespread misclassification of workers on construction projects throughout the District.  

At my office, we work every day to stand up for District workers who may not always have a voice, including by fighting wage theft and protecting workers’ rights. Since 2017, my office has opened over 50 wage theft investigations, and has recovered more than $3.2 million in restitution for workers.

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today hosted a roundtable discussion with workers and advocates ahead of Labor Day to help District workers understand their rights and make sure they get the wages and fair treatment they deserve. 

A new law, the Ban on Non-Compete Agreements Amendment Act of 2020, takes effect on March 16, 2021. The law bans the use of non-compete clauses for most workers in the District.     

The confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the highest court in the land will likely cement the concerted efforts by conservative activists over the recent decades to appoint a Supreme Court that will move the federal judiciary from a home for justice into an institution where individual rights are subordinated to the interests of big business in the country.
