WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today released a statement denouncing last night’s decision by the House Appropriations Committee of Congress include language in the federal budget repealing the District’s Death with Dignity Act. The law went into effect in February, 2017 and legalizes assisted dying.

Attorney General Racine’s statement is below:

“The District’s duly elected legislature passed the Death With Dignity Act last fall by an overwhelming vote of 11-2, and the Mayor signed it into law shortly thereafter. The House Appropriations Committee’s action to undo it is another attempt by some in the House to substitute their judgment for that of our residents and their elected representatives. I thank the committee members who stood up for democracy by voting against this incursion into the District’s local affairs.”
