Attorney General Racine Appoints Gary Kohlman as Senior Counsel

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced today that he has tapped veteran litigator Gary Kohlman to serve as Senior Counsel for Litigation. In this newly created role, Mr. Kohlman will advise on litigation and case strategy and provide litigation skills training to lawyers at the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). This appointment is part of Attorney General Racine’s continued efforts to ensure OAG is one of the nation’s premier public law firms by recruiting top legal talent and offering robust professional development opportunities to OAG employees.

“Simply put, Gary Kohlman is one of the country’s best trial lawyers,” said Attorney General Racine. "Gary is already participating in numerous significant matters. I am confident that his vast trial, litigation, and problem solving skills will be an asset to the office, our lawyers seeking advanced skills, and the residents of the District of Columbia.”

Mr. Kohlman comes to OAG from the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), where he served as General Counsel. Among other achievements, he successfully represented players in a $70 billion collective bargaining negotiation. Prior to the NBPA, Mr. Kohlman was in private practice in the District for more than 30 years, specializing in labor law, complex civil litigation, employee tax and benefits law, and white-collar criminal defense. Mr. Kohlman also has a strong background in public service, beginning his career at the District of Columbia Public Defender Service (PDS). At PDS, Mr. Kohlman began as Director of Training and then became Chief of the Trial Division, representing hundreds of indigent adults and children and achieving an unprecedented acquittal rate.

Mr. Kohlman holds both law and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Michigan.
