Attorney General Racine Criticizes Senator and House Member’s Attempt to Repeal District’s Gun Laws

District’s Gun Laws Comport with Constitution, Attorney General Says

Washington, DC – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today lamented an attempt by some members of Congress to completely upend the District’s gun laws and severely curtail District elected officials’ ability to pass future gun laws. The Attorney General further said that the District has acted responsibly in ensuring that its current gun laws are constitutional.

“The District’s citizens clearly and overwhelmingly support reasonable and constitutional restrictions on firearms. In response, our city’s elected officials have worked hard and in good faith to ensure that our gun laws comport with rulings by the Supreme Court and lower federal courts – and I am confident that they do,” Attorney General Racine said. “Simply put, it is unconscionable for members of Congress from other states, acting out of transparent political self-interest, to advocate a wholesale revocation of the clearly articulated expression of the residents on this important issue.”

Earlier today, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) announced that they were introducing a measure that would repeal almost all of the District’s local gun laws – including bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines – and prohibit the District from passing future gun-safety laws.
