Racine is calling on U.S. Department of Education (ED) Secretary Betsy DeVos to stop holding back student loan information that helps states protect student borrowers and stop delaying disclosure rules that will help students avoid predatory schools. AG Racine and 20 states urged DeVos in a letter to reverse her decision to end a decades-old ED policy of sharing crucial information about student borrower complaints with state law enforcement agencies and regulators.

Racine today led a coalition of 16 Attorneys General in opposing Florida’s recently enacted and discriminatory “Don’t Say Gay” law which prevents classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity, posing a serious threat to LGBTQ+ students who are particularly vulnerable to the harms caused by discrimination.

Announcing Lawsuit Against January 6 Insurrectionists

WASHINGTON, DC – Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today testified before the DC Council Committee on the Judiciary and Public safety regarding Titles I-III of the Utilizing Partnerships and Local Interventions for Truancy and Safety Amendment Act of 2024.

“This legislation offers ill-conceived proposals that are divorced from the data, put politics over problem solving, and will make the District less safe for all who live here, work here, and visit,” said Attorney General Schwalb.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that notorious landlord Sanford Capital, LLC, and its owner will return over $1.1 million in rent payments to 155 tenants forced to live in uninhabitable conditions. The joint settlement agreement resolves three consumer protection lawsuits the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) brought against Sanford for charging rent but failing to maintain its properties and endangering its tenants.

WASHINGTON, D. C. – The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) today filed a consumer-protection lawsuit in D.C. Superior Court against Florida-based Student Aid Center, Inc., and the company’s owners, Ramiro Fernandez-Moris and Damien Alvarez, for scamming consumers. OAG’s suit alleges that Student Aid Center and its owners unlawfully marketed student debt relief services to consumers in the District of Columbia – including services which Student Aid Center charged for, but which the consumers could have obtained for free from the U.S. Department of Education.
