WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that Capitol Drywall, Inc., a Maryland construction company, will be required to pay a $200,000 penalty as part of a wage theft settlement with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). The settlement resolves OAG’s investigation into allegations that Capitol Drywall’s subcontractor misclassified more than 100 District drywall workers as independent contractors instead of employees.

In 2015 the Office of Attorney General (OAG) launched a dedicated Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) to stand up for DC consumers and protect them from deceptive and unethical business practices. Since then, the office has become a leader in educating residents about their rights, investigating complaints reported by residents regarding potential violations of the consumer protection laws, and filing lawsuits against businesses and individuals that take advantage of residents.

Racine today announced that Drizly, an alcohol delivery company, will be required to pay an estimated total of $6.46 million to resolve allegations that it failed to ensure delivery drivers received tips left by consumers and failed to pay required  taxes.

Racine today announced a settlement with Austin Royster Funeral Home and its Chief Operating Officer (COO), Jamelle Royster, requiring them to pay $280,000 in relief to more than 60 eligible consumers who paid for funeral services they never received or suffered other financial losses at the hands of this business.

UPDATED on Friday, June 5, 2020: Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced the distribution of the $68 million multistate settlement with UBS AG (“UBS”) for fraudulent and anticompetitive conduct during the 2007-2008 financial crisis and its aftermath. District entities will receive over $820,000, of which the District of Columbia’s Office of Finance and Treasury will receive more than $519,000. Children’s National Hospital, a non-profit entity, will receive nearly $300,000 and the D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today joined a coalition of five Attorneys General in filing a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s Inadmissibility on Public Charge Grounds Final Rule, known as the “Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Public Charge Rule.” The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, claims the Rule targets working immigrants and their families by creating unnecessary new barriers to lawful admission to the United States.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine joined a coalition of 22 states and 7 local governments in announcing a lawsuit against the Trump Administration’s recently released“ACE” – aka “Dirty Power” – rule. The ACE rule is intended to replace the Clean Power Plan, the first-ever nationwide limits on one of the largest sources of climate change pollution: existing fossil-fueled power plants.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced he led a coalition of 19 Attorneys General urging the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to compel the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to properly regulate untraceable partially-assembled “ghost guns.” In an amicus brief filed in Syracuse v. ATF, the coalition asserts that the ATF must correct its unlawful 2015 interpretation of the Gun Control Act (GCA).
