Racine today alerted District residents to e-mails some residents have received from a scam artist claiming to be collecting debts for Cash Advance, Inc. or one of its affiliates. Some of these fraudulent e-mail messages are designed to appear as if they came from Attorney General Racine.

Office of the Attorney General Performance Oversight Hearing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This afternoon, Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb will participate in hearing before the Council of the District of Columbia about the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) work to make the District fairer, safer, and more equitable for all its residents. This will be the first time that AG Schwalb, the District’s second elected attorney general, will testify before the Council.

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced today that he has secured restitution and monetary penalties under a settlement of the District’s consumer protection claims against the owners and managers of the Terrace Manor apartments. Last year, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) brought suit against Sanford Capital LLC, Oakmont Management Group LLC, Terrace Manor LLC and Aubrey Carter Nowell, the owners and managers of the Ward 8 complex, alleging multiple violations of the District’s housing code and Consumer Protection Procedures Act.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that Apple will pay the District nearly $2.7 million as part of a $113 million multistate settlement for intentionally slowing down or “throttling” the performance of iPhone devices to cover up battery problems. Thirty four Attorneys General alleged that Apple deceived consumers about battery defects that caused some iPhones to unexpectedly shut off and used software updates that slowed phone performance to continue concealing the issue.

Washington, DC – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today alerted District businesses to telephone calls by scam artists claiming to be with Pepco. These fraudulent callers threaten to shut off businesses’ electric service within hours unless the businesses pay amounts they supposedly owe to Pepco. The callers request that the payments be made by prepaid card, money order or wire transfer – making it almost impossible for a business to recover its money after discovering it was scammed. 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced victories in three lawsuits filed by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to stop misuse of nonprofit funds, including the resolution of lawsuits against Public Media Lab (PML) and Pavilion USA 2020, Inc., which will return over $400,000 in misused funds to District nonprofits. In a third case, a judge ruled that a fraternity, Delta Phi Epsilon, its associated foundation, and its long-standing director illegally diverted nonprofit funds for personal benefit.
