Racine today announced that he has introduced comprehensive legislation that would significantly reform the District’s campaign finance laws to reduce both the reality and appearance that political donors have undue influence on official actions. The “Campaign Finance Transparency and Accountability Amendment Act of 2016” is designed to address multiple concerns that the Attorney General has heard from District residents in recent months.

Greetings Chairman Todd, Councilmembers, staff, and residents. My name is Ben Wiseman, Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Consumer Protection within the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia. I am here with Phil Ziperman, the Director of the Office of Consumer Protection. We are pleased to appear on behalf of Attorney General Karl Racine to testify at this public oversight roundtable on the impacts of net neutrality and the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) vote to repeal the 2015 net neutrality protections, also known as the Open Internet Rules.

Washington, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced a lawsuit against Turning Natural, Inc. and Jerri Evans – a local cafe and its owner – for failing to pay employees minimum wage and overtime, and failing to provide paid sick leave. In the complaint, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) alleges that Turning Natural systematically underpaid workers and failed to provide its employees with legally-required paid sick leave.

Racine today announced a lawsuit against a failed nonprofit that was founded to raise funds for the U.S. pavilion at the 2020 World’s Fair Exposition in Dubai and two of its founders, alleging that the founders improperly paid themselves more than $360,000.

WASHINGTON, DC – Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today announced that EasyPay Finance (EasyPay), a rent-a-bank lender that had operated in the District, will pay more than $215,000 to resolve allegations that it used predatory practices to deceive hundreds of District residents into paying interest rates significantly above DC’s legally allowed maximum rate.

Racine today announced that Instacart will expand its COVID-19 Extended Pay Program in order to address the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG’s) desire to expand protections for workers and protect public health. As part of the agreement with OAG, the on-demand grocery delivery company will immediately begin allowing workers nationwide to access up to 14 days of paid leave if a doctor diagnoses them with COVID-19 or if they live with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
