WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today filed a lawsuit against Sivil, Inc., a company that raised more than $284,000 from members of the public through the “crowdfunding” platform Kickstarter to produce athletic apparel. However, Sivil failed to deliver that apparel to its supporters as promised. Instead, the suit alleges that Sivil and its owner, Willard Simon, spent at least $112,000 of the money raised on personal expenses while failing to take steps toward producing apparel or providing refunds to consumers.

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine has joined 16 other state attorneys general in filing a motion to intervene in a federal appeals case in order to defend the constitutionality of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced today that the District has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by Boies, Schiller & Flexner on behalf of property owners who lost homes and home equity due to a tax-sale foreclosure system that has since been reformed to provide more safeguards. The parties worked together to reach a settlement that will provide compensation to those who lost home equity for the failure to pay a small amount of taxes under the old system.

Graves announced that Medgar Webster Sr., 52, of Washington, DC, pleaded guilty in Superior Court to one count of first degree felony fraud for committing time and attendance fraud on the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) filed eight separate lawsuits against 16 real estate companies and professionals for illegal housing discrimination in the District. OAG alleges that the defendants—realtors, property managers, and other individuals offering homes for rent in Wards 1, 4, 5, 7, and 8—posted discriminatory advertisements online stating that they would not rent to prospective tenants who used housing vouchers.
