AG Racine Sues Grubhub for Charging Hidden Fees & Using Misleading Marketing Tactics During the COVID-19 Pandemic to Increase Profits at the Expense of Consumers & Restaurants

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today filed a lawsuit against Grubhub Holdings, Inc. and Grubhub, Inc. (Grubhub), a food delivery company, for charging hidden fees and using deceptive marketing tactics during the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic to increase profits at the expense of consumers and local small businesses.

AG Racine Announces Nearly $4 Million Settlement with Predatory Online Lender That Will Compensate Thousands of District Consumers

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that Elevate Credit, Inc. (Elevate), a predatory online lender, will pay at least $3.3 million to refund over 2,500 District consumers who were misleadingly marketed high-cost loans and lines of credit, waive over $300,000 in interest owed by those consumers, and pay $450,000 to the District. The company will also be required to stop charging rates above the District’s legal cap of 24% and to cease deceptive and misleading business practices.

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today sued Google, LLC for deceiving and manipulating consumers to gain access to their location data, including making it nearly impossible for users to stop their location from being tracked. Three other attorneys general also plan to file lawsuits in their own state courts in a bipartisan, coordinated effort to hold Google accountable for misleading and violating the privacy of its users.

Racine and 20 other attorneys general urged the federal government to take critical and needed actions to help borrowers by addressing failures to implement mortgage restructuring programs to ensure those most financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic can afford their mortgages and remain in their homes.

AG Racine Announces Over $2 Million Settlement with Predatory Online Lender Will Compensate Thousands of District Consumers

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that predatory online lender, Opportunity Financial, LLC (OppFi), will pay $1.5 million to refund over 4,000 District consumers who were charged exploitive interest rates by the company, waive over $640,000 in interest owed by those consumers, and pay $250,000 to the District. The company will also be required to limit its lending to rates that are below the District’s legal cap and cease engaging in misleading business practices.
