Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today filed a lawsuit against Curbio, Inc. (Curbio), which markets itself as a pre-sale home renovation company that allows homeowners to defer payment until their homes are sold. The lawsuit alleges Curbio engages in a scheme of deception, intimidation, and fraud that traps District residents—targeting the elderly and financially disadvantaged—into unconscionable contracts, while performing overpriced, substandard work that often takes months—or years—longer than promised.

Last Thursday, I joined AARP DC State Director Louis Davis, Jr. and more than a hundred DC residents for a conversation about how our office prioritizes combatting exploitation of older District residents, how to help protect our older neighbors from financial abuse and scams, and how we can support our older relatives so they can live their golden years with dignity and security.

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today joined AARP DC State Director Louis Davis Jr. for a virtual conversation about the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) innovative approach to protecting the District’s 87,000 residents over 65 years old from elder exploitation, abuse, and neglect; holding predators of these crimes accountable; and educating residents about this type of abuse so they can live their golden years with dignity. 

Since 2019, OAG has obtained more than $544,000 in judgments and settlements for violations of the District’s financial exploitation statute.

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) achieved significant wins in two lawsuits against individuals who financially exploited vulnerable seniors. One lawsuit involved a nursing assistant at a long-term care facility who was stealing from residents, and another involved a son who improperly transferred ownership of his mother’s home to himself.
