Attorney General Obtains Settlement with Washington Sports Clubs Addressing Cancellation and Billing Practices

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced today that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) Office of Consumer Protection has obtained a settlement with Town Sports International, LLC, which operates eight health clubs in the District under the name Washington Sports Club. This settlement resolves claims that the company violated the District’s consumer protection and debt collection laws when it made misrepresentations about how consumers could cancel their memberships, and when it continued to bill consumers after they had canceled.

AG Racine Joins Bipartisan Coalition Urging Congress to Help Protect Employees from Sexual Harassment

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Attorney General Karl A. Racine has joined a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from 56 states and territories today urging Congress to end secret, forced arbitration in cases of workplace sexual harassment. Too often employees are required to sign employment contracts containing arbitration agreements mandating that sexual harassment claims be resolved through private arbitration instead of the judicial process. The secrecy surrounding these proceedings can protect serial violators and provide inadequate relief to victims.

Standing Up for Asylum-Seekers: Opposing Trump’s “Turnback Policy”

Last week, AG Racine joined a coalition of 20 AGs in opposing The Trump administration’s new "Turnback Policy," which unlawfully denies individuals access to the asylum process at ports of entry and turns them away. The policy is contrary to the United States’ treaty obligations and federal law, which require immigration officials to promptly give asylum-seekers a fair chance to present their claims.

Attorney General Racine Alerts District Consumers to Security Breach Affecting CareFirst’s Online Customers

Washington, DC – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today alerted District residents to a cyberattack on the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield network that may have affected thousands of customers in D.C. The attackers gained limited access to a database of accounts for those doing online business with the health-coverage network. The information to which the attackers gained access may have included the subscribers’ usernames as well as their legal names, birthdates, e-mail addresses and member identification numbers.

DC Consumers Eligible for Refunds in "Cramming" Settlement with AT&T Mobility

WASHINGTON, D.C. – D.C. consumers will be eligible for refunds from an $80 million fund to be established under a national settlement reached with AT&T Mobility, LLC, by the District of Columbia, all 50 states, and two federal agencies, D.C. Attorney General Irvin B. Nathan announced today.  The settlement resolves allegations that AT&T placed unauthorized charges for third-party services on consumers’ mobile telephone bills, a practice known as “cramming.”
