WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced a multistate settlement with Boston Scientific Corporation (Boston Scientific) to resolve allegations that the company deceptively marketed transvaginal surgical mesh devices to patients. The company agreed to pay $188.6 million as part of the settlement that resolves claims under consumer protection laws. The settlement requires Boston Scientific to pay more than $1.2 million to the District and to market its products in a way that discloses potential complications. 

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine has joined a friend-of-the-court brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court and signed by the District and 18 states in support of a transgender student – known as “G.G.” – who has sued his Virginia school board over a discriminatory policy that prevents him from using the restroom that conforms to his gender identity. The attorneys general argue that discrimination on the basis of gender identity causes real and significant harm to both transgender people and the states themselves.

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced today that he, 21 other state attorneys general, and the United States Department of Justice have reached an $863.8 million settlement with Moody’s Corporation, Moody’s Analytics, Inc. and Moody’s Investors Service, Inc. (collectively “Moody’s”) after an investigation into the Wall Street ratings agency. The District of Columbia is scheduled to receive $6.45 million from the settlement.

Attorney General Karl A. Racine today joined a coalition of five Attorneys General led by California in filing a motion for preliminary injunction to block the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Public Charge Rule from taking effect while litigation continues. The final rule targets working immigrants and their families by creating unnecessary new barriers to lawful admission to the United States.

WASHINGTON, D. C. – District residents who purchased electronic books (E-books) between April 1, 2010, and May 21, 2012, will begin receiving account credits or checks on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 as a result of a successful federal-state-District prosecution of Apple, Inc. for conspiring with major publishers to raise E-book prices in violation of antitrust laws. The distribution -- pursuant to a post-trial damages settlement with Apple -- includes District consumers’ share of $400 million in nationwide consumer compensation that the company paid after its request for review by the U.S.

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced a $220 million multistate settlement with Deutsche Bank for fraudulent and anticompetitive conduct during the 2007-2008 financial crisis and its aftermath; of that, non-profit and government entities in the District may be eligible to receive approximately $1.7 million.

WASHINGTON, DC – Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today urged the US Supreme Court to hear an important case to preserve states’ authority to bar individuals subject to domestic violence restraining orders from accessing guns. In an amicus brief filed in United States v. Rahimi, a coalition of 25 attorneys general led by AG Schwalb and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul urge the Supreme Court to review and overturn an appellate court’s decision striking down a federal law meant to protect survivors of abuse from gun violence.
